Many people’s trust in humanity has been restored thanks to a snapshot taken during a traffic stop in North Carolina.
Ashlye V. Wilkerson, 39, was taking her father, Anthony “Tony” Geddis, back to his Columbia, South Carolina, home after a round of chemotherapy treatments at Duke University Medical Center.
“We heard a siren and saw a blue light coming behind us. I immediately looked down and to the sign on my right to see what speed I was doing and the speed limit. I then realized that the speed limit changed from what I was previously going by,” she said.
By the time the trooper reached them, her father had already rolled down the window.
Trooper Jaret Doty introduced himself and asked for going Wilkerson’s license and registration.
Her father, as usual, was eager to defend his daughter.
“This is my baby girl,” he told Doty. “She’s driving me home from a chemo treatment at the cancer center at Duke.”
Doty went back to his patrol cruiser to look over Wilkerson’s papers. He knew he couldn’t give Wilkerson a ticket for speeding, but he pondered if there was anything else he could do.
Doty walked back to Wilkerson’s car and asked if he can pray for Geddis.
Geddis replied: “Of course. I absolutely believe in prayer.”
Doty said a prayer for Geddis. He handed Wilkerson a ticket and stated that he would keep praying for their family.
Wilkerson’s father died two months later, at the age of 61.
On LinkedIn, she wrote a tribute to her father as if she were speaking directly to him. She uploaded a snapshot of the traffic stop even though she didn’t know the state trooper’s name.
“You didn’t know I captured this picture in the moment but I did it so it could continue to remind me of two things:
1- You always protected me even through your final days; and
2- You were a fighter, firm believer in Christ, and a praying warrior.
I’m so grateful for your love, guidance, and example. Heartfelt thanks to this officer who prayed for and with you that day.”
Wilkerson has more than just a photograph to prove it. Doty placed a little silver cross in the hand of her father during the prayer. It was on her father’s dresser until his death.
She always referred to herself as a “Daddy’s girl,” even though she is married and has children.
“My father was my favorite person in the world,” Wilkerson said.
