It has been an unspoken tradition for beachgoers to collect seashells along the shore and take them home as souvenirs. One artist, New York-based jewelry designer Anna Chan, envisioned a beautiful world of seashell animals — as shown in her artful mosaics.

Anna found herself having a lot of free time over the past year. So she and her 10-year-old daughter explored the beaches of Robert Moses State Park, where they started collecting a variety of seashells.

Anna realized that she had found herself a new medium to showcase her artistic talents.

She initially planned to create 12 different animal mosaics for a calendar. But she eventually got hooked on her new artform that it also became her new hobby!

Anna told My Modern Met, “Having worked on a small scale most of my life, being able to use my entire hands to sculpt large pieces was truly liberating, especially during such trying times.”

Using various materials naturally found on the beach, she has sculpted a wonderful collection of animals. She has created so many land animals, birds, and sea creatures that they could fill up an entire zoo!

Anna eventually moved her workspace from the beach to her home studio to fine-tune her art and create more permanent artworks.

But she continues to bask in the simple joy of putting together different seashells, just like you would in a jigsaw puzzle.

“The seashells are like little jewels to me,” Anna told MMM. “Each one a mosaic piece finding its place in the big picture.”

She added, “I’m inspired by their colors, texture and shapes and even the broken pieces, I find beauty in it.”
