Firefighters in Portland, Oregon, saved a 14-year-old Labrador retriever named Tess who fell into a 23-foot-deep manhole on Friday morning. The manhole cover had been removed by Environmental Services to inspect storm drains when Tess walked up expecting a treat and fell in.
The dog’s owners, Larry and Linda Beutler, were shocked and worried for their beloved pet. Luckily, firefighters were able to rescue Tess by lowering a firefighter into the manhole and using a pulley system to bring her back up to the street.
The rescue operation took about an hour, but Tess wasn’t hurt in the incident because a pile of leaves and debris at the bottom of the manhole cushioned her fall.
In a separate incident last week, a small dog named Tofu was rescued off the coast of Long Beach, California, by a marine safety officer who set off on a paddleboard to rescue the stranded pup and safely reunite her with her owner.
