“It’s just a miracle to me to be living there in a house this beautiful.” These are the words of Tim Shea, a 70-year-old man who once never had a place to live in, but now relishes every homey moment in his “comfortable” nest.
Besides this significant change in his life, what’s more amazing is that Tim’s house is made of fascinating technology — he was the first person in the world to move into a 3D printed home!
“When I found out I’d be the first person in America to move into a 3D-printed home, I thought it was pretty awesome,” Tim told New York Post. “The very people I used to run away from, I’m running to. If you’ve been on both sides of the fence, you know some people just need a little encouragement and support.”
Tim’s house, which is in Community First! village in Austin, Texas, exhibits proprietary 3D printing technology, cutting-edge materials, and a specific type of concrete by ICON, the company revolutionizing homebuilding.
Its CEO and co-founder Jason Ballard said that concrete “is going to last a lot, lot longer than most conventional building materials.”
Community First! is a “51-acre master planned community that provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for men and women coming out of chronic homelessness.”
The ICON-printed concrete tiny houses like Tim’s — each 400 square feet — are part of the neighborhood. Each house showcases a bedroom, a bathroom, a full kitchen, a living room, and a porch.
With house features as these, Tim could be definitely right when he said that the house gives him so much comfort and some sense of pride.
“I feel like I am embraced in this house. There are no tight corners, it’s rounded, it feels like it envelops me. I just love sitting in there and looking at the interior of it. It’s just a very comfortable, very warm, welcoming place, and I am so proud to be living in it,” said Tim, a former heroin addict who used to live in an RV.
Never did he reckon, even in his wildest dreams, that he could be living in such a beautiful home as this.
“I could never have imagined from where I came from that I would ever have this beautiful place to live in. It’s just a miracle…” was all Tim could say.
