Winter can be such a tormenting time for warm blooded animals, more so if they’re homeless. With no decent shelter to keep them warm, these animals would often rely on the mercy of good-hearted people, or just stay out in the chilly open.

But one animal-loving mom decided to take the extra mile in making a difference — at least in the lives of these homeless cats — by providing them a makeshift shelter.

Stephanie Lindquist-Johnson, along with her six-year-old kid Philip, appealed to their neighbors to donate any shelved or unwanted foam coolers, and the response was just amazing!

“The response was incredible,” Stephanie said. She shared that within hours of posting her simple plea through Nextdoor, a lot of people, mostly strangers, were dropping off coolers at her house. Others also donated cash to help her with the project.

The mother-son tandem wasted no time, and began building these tiny weather-proof homes for “four-pawed animals.”

Each house took about an hour to make, which was both fun and gratifying for Stephanie and Philip.

The construction is quite simple but carefully done. Portholes are cut into each cooler, and are tightly wrapped around using heavy-duty plastic trash bags. Hay will then be stuffed inside, which acts as a “house warmer.”

Once the houses were fully built, they would donate them to local shelters within their community for free! So far, Stephanie and Philip have already donated 44 insulated homes since their project started back in December.

Both animal lovers, Stephanie and Philip volunteer at Another Chance Cat Rescue in Waldo. Although a web designer by trade, Stephanie makes sure to spend her free time helping the helpless — particularly animals who have no families to go home to.

The best part is, the mom-son duo is not done yet. They will continue to do what they do until they are able to provide a safe, warm, and comfortable shelter, one homeless cat at a time.
