WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!

In Lebanon’s windy Akkar governate, a literature student named Mohamad Sabsabi dropped out of university due to hyperinflation, but used his self-taught engineering skills to build a wind turbine on his grandmother’s roof.

With unreliable government-supplied electricity, solar panels have become a popular option in the region, but Sabsabi saw an opportunity to harness wind power when the sun was behind the clouds. Using scrap materials like old water drums, steel beams, and a cart wheel, he successfully built a working turbine that produces electricity.

Sabsabi hopes his invention will inspire a wind industry in north Lebanon and provide power to those without access to solar panels.
